Weather and cancellations on a Toronto helicopter tour

What actually grounds a flight

Four things, and rain is not really one of them

Wind, cloud base and snow are the real risks; rain is mostly a mood.

Wind. The flight runs over open water for most of its length and Lake Ontario generates wind reliably through the day. This is the commonest reason a Toronto helicopter tour does not depart, and it is also the reason the first slot of the day is the safest one to book.

Cloud base. Sightseeing flights are flown under visual rules, with minimum visibility and a minimum distance below cloud. High overcast is fine; a low ceiling over the lake is not, whatever the ground weather looks like.

Snow and freezing conditions. November to March. This is why winter has both the clearest air of the year and the highest cancellation rate — the same cold systems deliver both.

Rain, mostly, does not. Light rain with good visibility usually flies. The photographs are worse and the flight is the same. A grey Toronto helicopter tour is a disappointing photograph and a perfectly good fourteen minutes.
